Bucking the Trend Down Under with Our Engineered Service

In Australia, a common misconception about overhead lifting device inspections is that the Australian Standard AS2550.1 mandates quarterly inspections for all such devices. However, what the regulations actually say is that in the absence of OEM recommendations or an analysis of risk in operations, then quarterly inspections are recommended as a minimum.

“Routine Inspections shall be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations.”- (Standards Australia AS 2550.1 2011)


Another misconception is that AS 2550.1 has been legislated; in fact, Australian legislation simply requires that a risk mitigation process be undertaken to determine the routine inspection requirements of lifting devices. 

Due to not clearly understanding or simply misunderstanding industry regulations, crane owners conducting often unnecessary quarterly inspections has become a common phenomenon in Australia over the years. In response, MHE-Demag Australia has recently introduced a unique service program called Engineered Service. to the Australian market.


Engineered Service. is a maintenance concept without precedent in our industry and delivers the Strategic Partnership that customers need from a service provider. Engineered Service. comprises of consultative elements, such as a truly customized service plan that meets the intent of both OEM requirements and the Australian Standards without relying on “cookie-cutter” templates that artificially inflate the cost of service for our customers’ equipment. 


Mr. Mark Beckwith, Service Division Manager, MHE-Demag Australia, said “We define the scope of a Maintenance Agreement based on a consultation process that is risk mitigated by configuring it in relation to actual usage and duty cycle, location, installation and operating environment, as well as OEM requirements, Australian Standards and any applicable Legislation.  Furthermore, transparency is assured in all aspects of the program delivery, from detailed quotations and invoices to cost-of-maintenance at the equipment level. Real-time reporting, also delivered as part of the program, will soon include real-time predictive maintenance tools that will further minimise unexpected and unplanned repairs and the associated downtime.”
